In this session, we will discuss what leadership is and what it is not. Leadership is not a position or title, a higher pay grade or additional responsibilities – this notion is an incomplete appreciation and inaccurate assessment of what true leadership is. Leadership is about purpose, influence and impact, and for early childhood professionals that purpose is embodied in pedagogical leadership. As pedagogical leaders, we are responsible for creating environments in which our children, families and each other feel safe, respected and motivated. Every leader at every level of experience and skill has room for growth, but the
thought of setting and achieving leadership goals may leave you wondering where to begin. Research: The examination of extensive research and global consultation(s) has led to several of understandings about leadership in early childhood environments that include:
• Leadership is about identity—it starts from within
• Leadership is about influence and is potentially open to everyone
• Leadership demonstrates respect as an enactment of ethical commitments
• Leadership is about qualities and values rather than position and power
• Leadership capabilities can be professionally developed

In this presentation, we raise our voices and work towards leadership by sharing our stories as early childhood professionals working with newcomer families and children. What does it mean to work in non-traditional childcare spaces such as non-government organizations (NGO)? How does this work influence us as ECEs? How do our lived experiences of migration influence not only our personal but also our professional life? These are some questions we hope to discuss. Our presentation creates a space to share with educators and others about what we have learned about ourselves from our lived experiences of working with families who have diverse strengths and needs. We will discuss how we center culture, love, commitment, and emotional professionalism within our pedagogy and practice as we make meaning together with families and colleagues. Through this presentation, we hope to reaffirm and reclaim our role as valuable educators and leaders as we share our knowledge with other professionals and learn as a collective. Our journeys, feelings, stories, and the connections we make with colleagues and newcomer families, will not only raise our voice but also position us as leaders who will raise each other up.
Richard Monette has led Active for Life (AfL) since its launch in 2012. Recognizing that the digital age was replacing traditional play with screen-based activities, AfL adopted a novel strategy: helping parents and educators encourage active habits in children. AfL provides clear, simple, and engaging online resources that highlight the importance of active play for children's cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development. These free resources show that getting children active can be simple and affordable, attracting approximately two million unique visitors annually.
AfL promotes active play as a powerful educational tool, especially for preschool children (ages 0-5). Active play supports their physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth, laying a strong foundation for their future health, well-being, and success.
Recently, AfL launched a new program, “Active Play in Childcare,” aimed at empowering Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) to integrate active play into early childhood education. This program provides practical and inexpensive ways to improve childcare quality.

This workshop will discuss the causes for emotional stress for newcomer children. The educators will learn about self-regulation, reflective behaviour and relationship building. We will explore a strength-based approach that focuses on what we can do vs. stigmatizing children and adults who are struggling. We will also discuss the underlying factors that affect children's emotional health. We will talk about creating a child centred curriculum and environment to manage these issues.
In this session, through a variety of short experiences and self-reflection, we will work towards embracing each other’s differences to move to a place of understanding, safer spaces of belonging, and joy for all. Together, participants will examine biases, gain an understanding of intersectionality and look at the construct of race. We will also explore ways to support the building of authentic relationships and environments that represent the diversity and discovery of self in the world around us. Participants will also receive a list of resources that can be used to support the further exploration of who we are and how we connect with one another as we work towards belonging, inclusiveness, and true connection in our communities of care.
Our LINC childcare program has engaged with documentation for several years. At first, we struggled with how to capture moments when the children did not speak English. We had to learn to listen with more than our ears—to listen with our whole selves. With the practice of documentation, we are able to capture stories that the children share with us and highlight their learning as well as ours. In this session, we will share what our team has learned.

Designing a "YES" space for children is a great way to create a safe and engaging environment that promotes exploration, independence, and learning. A "YES" space is a designated area where children can play and explore freely, without restriction. In this presentation, you will learn what a yes space is, how it makes happier children, the educator's role and how to start designing a yes space.

Did you know in every child's eyes, you are the best singer they have ever heard? Well guess what? You are!! Music is inside each and every one of us. You are a natural born musician and perhaps, you just don't know it yet!
Music feels good - and I am here to show you how it can be an amazing teaching tool that can bring great balance to your day within your role as an early childhood educator. It helps with the daily rhythm and flow. It helps create an environment, and really sets the tone to set the day. In this session, we will also talk about the positive impact music has for our CNC programs in supporting and learning language, and how our vocal tonality, as well as simple instruments, are hidden treasures that we have within us to support this in our teaching. I am excited to share real-life tips and tricks, songs and sounds. The goal for this session is to provide simple and inspiring strategies that will encourage you to bring out that music that is inside you… it's truly the best teaching tool!
Before, during, after? When it comes to being reflective, what is the best way to do it and how? This workshop will focus on reflective practice tools and strategies to help us look in the mirror and uncover some hidden why's. Why did the child respond how they did? Why did I feel the way I did about a situation? Why can't I let it go?, and much more. Digging into these areas can be uncomfortable, but that is where the most growth happens. This will be a safe space to begin that journey of meaningful and genuine reflective practice that results in more inclusive spaces.
Sensory fun for everyone! Are you ready to explore with all your senses? Are you ready to get hands on and messy with some sensational sensory ideas? That’s what we will explore in our workshop all about sensory play. Sensory play is a multi-model approach to learning delivered through the best way possible – through play! I’ll share with you some of my favourite sensory play experiences for children from 0-12 years! Creating a sensory rich environment is more than just toys and materials, it’s about using all your senses to create a play space that welcomes all children to explore and discover using a variety of their senses. From lights, textures and sounds to materials and play experiences that create unique learning experiences for young children. Join me as we find new ways to stimulate children’s curiosity to explore with their senses and engage in rich playful learning opportunities!
Attending to Social Emotional needs in the early environment matters. Not all children have the social competence needed for group play. In childcare, there are large periods of uninterrupted playtime, and children need specific social skills to get along! We are actually creating stress for children if they are left to navigate on their own when interacting with others. Research clearly tells us that “Establishing relationships with other children is one of the major developmental tasks of early childhood. How well children fare at this task appears to matter." In this session, we will begin by discussing why social competence matters. We will highlight the challenges some children face in group play and the increased demands social play creates for their sense of belonging, their well-being and sense of calm. We will also explore what competencies and strengths early educators need to be able to support children in social emotional learning. Then, we’ll wrap up with a variety of approaches and strategies that can be used in your program.
